History of the Faculty of Engineering

Thammasat University began developing educational facilities for engineering science and technology in the last two years of the 6th Plan for Educational Development (1990-1991). The purpose was for the university to contribute towards producing engineers in different fields of expertise for the benefit of society and the nation in line with government policy, which aims to produce knowledgeable engineering personnel. His Majesty the King signed a Royal Decree officially establishing the Faculty of Engineering on 19th August 1989, making it the 10th faculty at Thammasat University and the 9th engineering faculty among public universities. Teaching began in the academic year of 1990. The following provides a chronological outline of events:

1990 academic year: Admissions began for students in electrical and industrial engineering

1991 academic year: Admissions began for civil engineering students

1993 academic year: Admissions began for chemical engineering students

1995 academic year: Admissions began for mechanical engineering students

1996 academic year: Admissions began for the Twinning Engineering Programmes (TEP), allowing students to complete their education at both Thammasat University and the University of Nottingham in the UK. The fields represented were electrical, industrial, civil, chemical and mechanical engineering.

1997 academic year: Admissions began for the Master’s Degree programmes in industrial and civil engineering

2001 academic year: Admissions began for the Twinning Engineering Programmes (TEP) in conjunction with the University of Regina in Canada. The fields represented were electrical, industrial, civil, chemical and mechanical engineering.

2002 academic year: Admissions began for the Thammasat English Programme of Engineering (TEPE), offering electrical, industrial, civil, chemical and mechanical engineering.

2002 academic year: Admissions began for the Master’s Degree programmes in electrical and chemical engineering.

2002 academic year: Admissions began for the PhD programme in civil engineering.

2002 academic year: Establishment of the computer engineering programme.

2008 academic year: Establishment of the Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree programmes in Engineering and Business Management (EBM), as well as Master’s Degree and PhD programmes in Medical Engineering.
